Service Project Spotlight: 25 years with Adopt A Highway

MWA provides the Lower Makefield Township (LMT) roads department with our volunteer effort to “keep the highways clean.” MWA members maintain a 3 mile stretch of roadway in LMT. Four to six times a year (weather permitting) members patrol this portion of road and pick up litter.

Our “highway” is Edgewood Road in Lower Makefield Township. PennDot has recognized us with a sign at the intersection of Edgewood and Makefield Roads in the Township. MWA has served as the sponsor of this portion of the roadway for over 20 years.
This year we participated in the 2015 Great American Cleanup along with 67 counties in this annual community improvement event. In total, there were 4,931 events with 128,157 volunteers. Volunteers collected 300,186 bags, or 6,003,720 pounds of trash and cleaned 11,943 miles of roads, railroad tracks, trails, waterways, and shorelines, and 6,422 acres of park and/or wetlands. Additionally, volunteers planted 13,050 trees, bulbs, and plants in an effort to keep Pennsylvania beautiful.
