Ten years ago, I began looking for a volunteer organization that was flexible enough to fit my already busy schedule. With a husband, three kids, and a fulfilling job as a speech therapist, I wanted to do community service that felt comfortable, not overwhelming. That’s when I discovered MWA.
Because the association was founded 45 years ago, I automatically knew that volunteer opportunities were well in place. Over the years, I enjoyed heading Caring For Friends and being on the website committee so much that I decided to become more invested, joining the board as Membership Chair. Soon, I decided to take on an even bigger challenge: spearheading Bingo Night, our main fundraising initiative. It’s been a joy to watch the event grow and a gratifying experience to see members collaborate months in advance to support our beneficiaries. Two years ago, I decided to take it even further and became MWA President.
During this time, I’ve come to understand the inner workings of the organization better and have delighted in watching our membership increase. It makes me proud to continue facilitating the work of a group of like-minded, talented women who are so willing to devote time and energy to local causes. Along the way, I’ve participated in various adjunct volunteer opportunities. The most rewarding experience includes serving meals at the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen. It reminds me that the need for food is immediate, and that it takes only time to fulfill that need. I’ve also enjoyed Trivia Nights, dinners out, garden parties, and holiday gift exchanges. These activities continue to fulfill my original goal: to find a diverse organization that fits my schedule, especially now that I’ve welcomed my first, darling grandchild.
