When I retired, I promised myself that I would pursue three goals: to continue traveling, to learn a new hobby, and to join a women’s group focused on community service.  I have to admit that the first two are works in progress, but I am pretty happy to say that I achieved the last one when I joined MWA.

Working for over 20 years in the Human Resources Department of a financial services company was rewarding and challenging; being part of its philanthropic group was especially enjoyable. Realizing that I would miss this dimension after retirement, I soon joined MWA when I discovered how many  initiatives are in the offing:  Caring For Friends is just one that I particularly enjoy.  Designer Bag Bingo is indisputably the highlight of our fundraising efforts, as every member joins together to help make the night go seamlessly.  There are also many opportunities to develop friendships during social nights at dinners and wineries, but especially through the book club, where I’ve expanded my repertoire with each title. I’ve recently joined the board as Membership Chair, where I can introduce like-minded candidates to a club with community and camaraderie as its purpose.

So, with this third goal solidly in my pocket, I get to attend to my other interests. In between traveling to South Africa (on my husband’s bucket list), visiting stepchildren and grandchildren, and coddling our dog Memphis, a Spinone Italiano, I’ve made inroads into my challenging new hobby of making wreaths and arrangements. Similar to my experience with MWA, I’m continually amazed that, by making just a small but wholehearted effort, awesome things of beauty and meaning can result.
