Born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, I tend to have a somewhat broad, more global perspective on the environment in which I live. I’ve lately noticed that the world has become a less secure place, so it makes sense to me to seek ways to do something positive for the community. And though I’ve been a member of Makefield Women’s Association for just a short time, I’ve found that the association offers a variety of options to make the world safer, starting with the immediate community.
Since I’ve joined, I’ve participated in Family Services and initiatives to help those experiencing food insecurity and homelessness; I believe we should make it a priority to help others when we can and offer compassion to those less fortunate. I especially like being on the Adopt-A-Highway committee, as making our roads cleaner feels like an immediate, tangible way to help our town and our planet. Also, the cleanup brought back fond memories of doing the same work at one of our beaches in Puerto Rico. Endeavors like this remind me that even one small gesture is better than doing nothing at all.
Though my most enjoyable hobby is reading, I’m exploring new activities, such as running a 5K and learning Mandarin. Though I consider myself a bit shy, I enjoy getting to know new people, so attending social events like trivia nights and book club meetings has made it easier to connect with other members as we share rewarding experiences and ideas. What stands out to me is that we all share a common goal of helping our neighbors and beneficiaries in unique and innovative ways, with a wide-ranging impact. My advice to those considering joining our group is to explore innovative ways and choose the ones that resonate best.
