When I think about it, I guess I have my husband to thank for moving me to Bucks County from Buffalo, New York, about 45 years ago. After retiring from over three decades with the federal government, I was looking for an organization that not only offered a variety of volunteer opportunities but also one where I could befriend like-minded women socially. After 26 years in MWA, I found all that and much more.
Over the years, I have served on multiple committees, including Caring for Friends, Harvest Day, Constitution, and Auditing and Budget. Especially rewarding was serving on the board as Internal Vice President and Secretary. Those positions enabled me to understand how the association is run from the inside and to have a more direct voice regarding decisions that affect the entire membership. Other favorite activities include chairing Adopt-A-Highway and A Women’s Place, where we can make a huge difference in the lives of our neighbors when they need it
most. Working with Family Services was gratifying, as we were able to clean and furnish an entire apartment, helping a family become independent and improve its quality of life.
I continue to be amazed by the number of new members and by their willingness to carry out our mission to help our community. As a result, the sheer array of opportunities to make a difference has grown, too. Even if you’re not part of a specific committee, all activities are open to everyone, which has led to some enriching friendships for me.
Outside of MWA, I enjoy participating in various sports, including bowling, bocce, and even cornhole. I am a faithful blood donor and have donated over 10 gallons of blood in the past 30 years. Despite that donation, I suppose you could say that volunteering is in my blood!
